Pisa

Pisa, medieval town, is famous for its history and its attractions.

The historic centre of Pisa is roughly in the shape of a quadrilateral surrounded by 12th-century walls, with sides measuring one and a half kilometres. The River Arno crosses the city from east to west, cutting it into two parts named Tramontana (north) and Mezzogiorno (south).

Situated on the southern edge of the city centre is Pisa central station (Pisa Centrale), a major junction in the Italian railway system. Pisa’s Galileo Galilei International Airport, located one and a half kilometres further south, has a railway terminal of its own (Pisa Aeroporto) providing direct access to Pisa Centrale and the rest of the regional and national network.

The old city is easily reached from the airport and the central station by bus or taxi. Frequent bus connections are also available for other parts of the city. The tourist area par excellence – the Field of Miracles - with the famous Leaning Tower – is situated at the northwestern end of the old city.

Boat tours on the River Arno provide an opportunity to see Pisa from an unusual perspective. Two tours are available – the Tour dei Lungarni, limited to the city centre, and the Tour Natura, extending westwards to include the Park of San Rossore. City Sightseeing tours on panoramic double-decker buses cover the Park of San Rossore, the riversides and the Field of Miracles.
